Engineering makes tools and building materials. Tools wear out fast and are always in demand, which makes the trade low-cost and fairly lucrative. Building materials go into upgrading locations, which improves their resource yields and defences.
Engineers do not make siege weapons. They do, however, make the [fishing rods](/wiki/crafting-guides/fishing) and the [workstation constructions](/wiki/crafting-guides/constructions) the other trades rely on.
Tools & their uses
| Tool | Used for |
|---|---|
| Shovel | Digging — Archaeology |
| Pickaxe | Mining |
| Woodcutter's Axe | Logging — Wood Cutting |
| Scythe | Farming |
Tool tiers
Every tool comes in five tiers, matching the Character Development colours:
| Tier | Grade |
|---|---|
| Gray | Novice |
| Green | Apprentice |
| Blue | Journeyman |
| Purple | Craftsman |
| Orange | Master |
Tier, quality & durability
- Higher tier → more damage per swing to a node.
- Higher quality → faster gathering. A high-tier, high-quality tool is ideal.
- Tools lose durability with every use; as durability drops, so do damage and speed — so repair or replace them.
You can gather actively by attacking a node (faster, costs stamina) or passively with E (slower, no stamina). Alternating between the two lets you regenerate stamina while you keep working — see Mining for the full trick.
